a note of explanation - i feel like in the end, their last conflict would be much more emotional than it would be physical, hence the lack of action-y pieces and the abundance of orchestral music. i envisioned it as more of a battle of wills with a focus on the bond they share.
This opening right here is probably my favorite one of all, not just because it’s SasuNaru, but because of the meaning behind it.
At first we see Naruto plummeting through the water and into the darkness with his forehead protector in his hand. He’s falling and everything suddenly turns black and white as falls deeper and deeper into the darkness; completely losing himself. He still has all of these threats around him that he still has yet to deal with, but none of them come close to being his main cause of turmoil than the person that’s right in front of him: the friend that he could never really see as an enemy; his first bond; the one that knows his pain on a level that no one else does; the one that became who he could have been; Sasuke.
And when Naruto thinks he couldn’t sink any further into the darkness, completely defeated, Sasuke chidori’s him, and he falls even deeper, but then Naruto realizes that he’s not alone. He’s surrounded by all of these people that he now has bonds with, and those people push him back up to the surface where he can breathe again and bring the color back into his life.
And this next part is what gets me so emotional about this freaking opening.
Naruto looks back down into the water and sees Sasuke, his friend, sinking back into the water; drowning in darkness. Sasuke doesn’t have anyone behind him to push him back up to resurface and see the light—at least he thinks he doesn’t. So then, Naruto puts back on his forehead protector, remembering exactly who he is, and then dives right back into that darkness, determined to never lose himself again and save his most precious person, like his friends saved him. And he will continue to keep diving until he and Sasuke are able to resurface together.
